Defiant protest against MCC
In February 2022, amidst the New Baneshwor area, the air resonated with defiant chants and resolute banners as protesters aimed to reach the federal parliament building. The protestors including political party members, cadres, and student activists were there to challenge the US-funded Millenium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact agreement.
MCC is a U.S. government aid agency, agreed in 2017 to provide a $500 million grant to fund a 300-km (187-mile) electricity transmission line and a road improvement project in Nepal.
To the protesters, this agreement represented more than just financial assistance. It had implications that stirred deep emotions and concerns. They argued that the MCC compact agreement posed a significant threat to Nepal's cherished laws and sovereignty. Fears of inadequate oversight over the MCC-funded projects roused their spirits, propelling them to action.
Tensions escalated as clashes erupted between the protestors and the police force. As the police tried to quell the dissent, teargas canisters hissed through the air, water cannons unleashed their force, and batons danced with fury.
As a photojournalist, I found myself immersed in the fervor of the protest, capturing the raw emotions and determination etched on the faces of the people involved.
