Gadhimai Mela: A contrast between animal’s cry and devotees’ belief

Every five years, the Gadhimai Temple in the Bara district of Nepal hosts one of the bloodiest festivals, known as the Gadhimai Mela. During this event, thousands of animals, including buffaloes, goats, and ducks, are sacrificed. Hindu devotees who participate in the festival believe that these sacrifices will please Goddess Gadhimai, bringing them prosperity and good fortune.

In 2024, reports indicated that 4,200 buffaloes were beheaded in the arena, while thousands of goats, ducks, and other animals were killed outside of it. In contrast, animal rights activists have been tirelessly working to end this practice. They rescue animals, engage with temple officials, organize community meetings, educate schoolchildren, and conduct awareness campaigns to advocate against the mass sacrifices. Despite these efforts, the ritual remains deeply rooted in the beliefs and traditions of the devotees, with a history that spans over 200 years.
